THE FOURTH DR.CHEAH YIN MEE ESSAY WRITING
COMPETITION 2013
CONTEST RULES AND GUIDELINES
Rationale:
This competition has been spearheaded by Dr.Cheah Yin Mee, a former student of SMK Convent Sentul, Kuala Lumpur. This competition aims to help students become more accurate, fluent, appropriate and effective users of English. This essay is also intended for students to reflect and improve upon their own writing. Dr.Cheah feels passionately about schools playing their part in giving young people the best possible chance to become knowledgeable, responsible and caring adults.
A. Eligibility
1. To be eligible for the contest, participants should be students of SMK Convent Sentul.
B. Theme and Format
1. The theme for the contest is “The miracle of so many amazing changes in such a short time is the best Christmas and New Year present ever, for the school”

Students are to comment on the makeover of the school and further investigate ways that the school can be improved and give their ideas and suggestions will be reviewed by the school administration. Students will have to provide, in a persuasive essay, reasons for implementing their proposed ideas and concrete supporting details. Students should consider changes to the curriculum, student activities, the canteen, field trips, assemblies and student services. Students are advised to read the principal’s posting regarding the makeover on the school website.
2. The essay must be original. Plagiarism is strictly forbidden.
It is not yet published in any printed material or posted on websites.
3. It must be written in English, composing of not less than 250 words for the lower secondary and not less than 400 hundred words for the upper secondary.
4. Entries must be typewritten/ printed on A4 size bond paper and must be double- spaced.
5. The essay should be typewritten/ printed using 12 font size and Times Roman or Arial style.
6. Short listed submissions should include a cover page indicating the title of the essay and the author’s name. This cover page will be removed before the review process.
C. Submission of Entries
1. All entries must be submitted to their class English subject teacher.
2. This competition is mandatory for all students. Essays are to be written in their class English book. Duration of competition is from 1st February until 8th March 2013.
3. Compulsory submission of 5 shortlisted entries from each class, duly corrected to be given to Pn.Vasantha. Dateline is on Monday, 18th March 2013.These entries must satisfy conditions stated from no.4 to no.6.
4. No class is exempted from this competition.
5. Soft copies of the winning entries should be sent via electronic mail at vasstha69 @yahoo.com. Entries through email shall be acknowledged upon receipt thereof.
D. Criteria for Judging
1. The Board of Judges shall be composed of the Principal, Pn.Tan Tee Hwa and Datin Cheam Swee Har for the upper secondary entries and Pn.Rohana Abu Hassan and Pn.Vasantha would judge the entries of the lower secondary students.
2. The entries shall be judged, in the first round at class level to pre-select the 5 finalists, on the basis of the following criteria:
Adherence to theme and originality - 35%
(Refers to the consistency of the ideas to the chosen topic and the uniqueness of the essay in all its components)
Substance and content - 25%
(Refers to the essence or the ideas that provide solid bases or support to the argument with excellent variety and highly effective blending of resources .
Style, Organization and creativity - 20%
(Refers to the presentation of the ideas in logical manner)
Language Proficiency/Coherence - 20%
(This refers to the accurate usage of the language)
3. The decision of the Board of Judges is final and the winners shall be announced on the 1st week of April, 2013.
E. Prizes and Awards - First Prize, Second Prize and Third Prize – Book Prize and Winning Entries to be published in the school Stellar Magazine. Guest Of Honour for the Speech Day Event will be invited to give away the prizes during Speech Day on 20th April 2013.
